Founded in October 1985 by “Auntie Helen” Agcaoili Summers Brown, FAL is an information repository for subjects related to the Philippines and the Filipino American community. Its mission is to actively promote the history, culture, and professional achievements of Filipinos and Filipino Americans through the book collection, leadership development, and cultural programming, thereby contributing to the achievement of a culturally dynamic, multiethnic America.

A need exists in the Filipino American community to preserve Filipino history, culture, and traditions for future generations. As the largest Asian demographic in the City of Los Angeles, as well as the second largest Asian demographic both in the State of California and in the United States, a basic knowledge of Filipino Americans is important to the overall understanding of this country. The desire to learn about Filipino Americans will continue to increase dramatically, as is evident by the 30.3% increase in the community’s population from 1990 to 2000.
